Everything you don't know about dandruff and itchy scalp...

An itchy, flaky scalp, dandruff galore—we could all do without it, right? The Christmas spirit is lovely, but not for our hair! While taking care of our hair seems natural, let's not neglect our scalp; let's treat it like the apple of our eye! We'll explain everything in this article.

    What is film?

Often considered unsightly, dandruff has a knack for embarrassing us (and driving us crazy). It affects everyone, at any age. Resembling tiny snowflakes, these dead skin cells flake off your scalp and coat your hair. Throughout the day, they can also accumulate on your shoulders and clothes (pure joy...).

There are 2 types of film:

    • Oily dandruff is caused by an excess of sebum . It has a sticky appearance. White or yellowish in color, it tends to adhere to the scalp and hair roots. It can sometimes lead to excessive hair loss because it prevents the scalp from breathing. If accompanied by red patches, it is best to consult a dermatologist, as it could be a sign of seborrheic dermatitis.
    • Dry dandruff , on the other hand, is linked to dehydration of the scalp. The flakes are small and easily dispersed. Unlike oily dandruff, they don't clog the scalp and fall off easily. They are often accompanied by discomfort, a feeling of dryness, and tightness.

    Why do I have dandruff?

Whether oily or dry , dandruff is due to an imbalance in the scalp .

This imbalance can be explained by:

    • A hormonal imbalance : Our hormones control our sebum production. When they become unbalanced, they can increase sebum production and thus increase the appearance of oily dandruff. It's worth remembering that the presence of sebum is normal. Without it, our skin, hair, and scalp would be as dry as the Sahara Desert!
    • Hard water : If you have dandruff and itching , your shower water might be the culprit! If your water is hard, it contains too much calcium and magnesium ions. When this water heats up, these elements crystallize and end up depositing on your hair. These microcrystals irritate and unbalance your scalp, causing tightness, irritation, itching, and dry dandruff (again…).
    • The use of chemicals : Products containing sulfates and silicones are very often the cause of dandruff. These chemicals irritate and dry out our scalp, and have a stripping effect. A perfect breeding ground for dandruff…
    • Bad hair care habits : If you use a brush that has never been cleaned, for example, you are unintentionally contributing to scalp problems! Imagine everything that accumulates in that brush: hair, dead skin cells, sebum, pollution… and much more!
    • Using a hairdryer that's too hot and too close to the scalp : Drying your hair with a hairdryer that's too hot increases sebum production and promotes oily dandruff . Take the time to adjust the temperature of your hairdryer and avoid using it too close to your scalp. Expert advice!

As a result of these multiple factors, you end up with a scalp in a state of disarray. It itches, irritates, and is uncomfortable. A real snowball effect (no pun intended)! Not to mention that hair growing on an unhealthy scalp is also fragile and has surface damage.

    What are the solutions?

You therefore need to restore the balance that your scalp has unintentionally lost! To do this:

    • Use the most natural shampoo possible ! To cleanse your scalp more quickly, choose one with purifying and anti-dandruff ingredients like peppermint or white clay.
